Yurko Gutsulyak

Yurko Gutsulyak has been in the graphic design industry since 2000. Due to the success of his project, he established his own independent design studio in Kiev (Ukraine) in 2005 and soon won the recognition of the country's leading design boutiques. Since then, Yurko Gutsulyak has won more than 100 international awards in the field of design and advertising. The most prestigious are the European Design Award, Red Dot Award, Epika Award, Graphis, Pentawards, Dieline Award and Communication Art Award. He is the first Ukrainian graphic designer to attract the attention of leading European design magazines and publishers. Some of his works are exhibited in design museums in France, Germany, Poland, Mexico and China. In 2017, Yurko Gutsulyak moved to Toronto, Canada, and now Gutsulyak.Studio continues to operate on two continents.

The SHAMOBO logo won the Silver Graphis Award in New York. The winning works are included in the book Graphis Design Annual 2021, which introduces the best design works in the world this year.

About the LOGO

SHAMOBO was my first contact with Chinese fonts. I was overwhelmed by the SHAMOBO team's trust in me, as I did not speak Chinese and had a basic understanding of the structure of object glyphs. I feel all the responsibility aimed at expressing respect for Chinese culture and understanding the long and deep Chinese tradition. Also, I like to learn new symbols and encode all the hidden meanings that westerners don't know. While researching different styles and methods, I am always surprised by the feedback I receive. I'm cautious about the Chinese section because I can't judge its readability to native speakers, but the SHAMOBO team keeps asking for more experimental solutions. On the other hand, I feel free about the English part. However, the feedback is that it is unreadable and even confusing. As a result, the final result balances many elements, such as experimentation, readability, style and stroke structure. What's more, the Ukrainian graphics of the early twentieth century had little influence on the English section. All in all, I can attest that the SHAMOBO logo is a truly multicultural design.
